Who's Melinda Quintero?
Personal Information
I originally come from Los Angeles, California, but I went to university and lived in New York City, New York. I moved to Krakow in April 2011 with my fiance'. We were invited -- and enticed -- to move to Krakow by our good friends who run an English-teaching, translation, and proofreading business here. Though we thought we would only live in Krakow for a few months, it turns out that we love life here so much that we have decided to stay.
Travel and writing have served as major themes throughout my professional career. Thanks to my extensive travel experience throughout Europe and West Africa during my university years, I landed my first job with one of America's best-selling travel guidebook companies. By working directly with authors, editors, readers, and publishers, I developed a keen eye for style and a curious mind for grammar. I strive towards comprehensive clarity in my own writing and my authors' work. As a teacher, I seek to improve my students' understanding of the mechanics of the English language as well as its dizzying breadth and depth of expression.
I love working with words and am looking forward to helping you find your own voice in English.
Education
- Graduated in 2005 with Bachelor of Arts from New York Unviersity's Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
- Crafted my own major: a combination of literature from the developing world and the history of religion.
- Studied one academic year in Florence, Italy, and an academic semester in Accra, Ghana.
Qualifications
- Interned at a literary agency and a literary scouting agency; wrote reader reports for a literary agent.
- Started working in 2005 for the Frommer's Travel Guides, an imprint of John Wiley & Sons, Inc, as the Editorial Assistant to the publisher.
- Worked my way up from Publisher's Assistant to Associate Editor.
- Edited between eight and 10 Frommer's guidebooks a year. Titles that I am most proud of include Frommer's Bali & Lombok First Edition, Frommer's China Fourth Edition, and Frommer's Mexico 2010.
- Freelance writer and editor for Frommer's since 2010.
Experience
- Edit guidebooks, write original travel content for Frommers.com, and write and edit original travel content for Frommer's clients.
- Write online content for major travel brands such as American Airlines, Carnival Cruises, Copa Airlines, and Holiday Inn.
- Proofread academic papers, journals, and websites translated from Polish since 2011.
- Teach advanced students translation and proofreading skills.
- Offer advanced English conversation and reading/listening comprehension to students ages 17 and up.

My primary personal interest is travel. Working for a travel guidebook company affords me the pleasure of reading about all the farthest-flung places on the planet. Even when I know I may never visit, I never tire of hearing about all the endless variety of landscapes, cultures, music, foods, animals, plants, and people on Earth.
I am a certified yoga instructor in the U.S. and an avid yoga practitioner. I also try to meditate once a day. I draw, though not as often as I would like, and read in my spare time.
I speak Italian quite well and Spanish a little less so. I am learning Polish, though my progress is slow going.
